My top ten songs of 2012 are coming next week. In the meantime I wanted to share with you what others among the YoBigBro followers were enjoying this past year, to include their reason why. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays this season!
Bassnectar “Nothing Has Been Broken” (Ft Tina Malia)
You got it. And it comes from an artist to whom you introduced me–now one of my favorites. Clearly dubstep in the form of Bassnectar, yet with vocals hypnotic in their chant-like repetition. A closing change in lyrics–an epiphany–requires a rethinking of the entire trip. And of the way we see and interact with the world. Enjoy!
Flying Lotus “See Thru To U” (Ft Eryka Badu)
If this was my first intro to dubstep I would be a huge fan. Subtle and multi-layered. The tribal beat hypnotizes while Erkyah whispers in your ear.
Kendra Morris “Concrete Waves”
First time I heard it I thought it was so catchy. I am a big Adele fan and she has a similar raspy to her voice.
Rodriguez “I Wonder”
This is all I can think of.
Yoko Ono “Firework” (Katy Perry cover)
So beautiful and frightening. Is this art?
Jack White “Sixteen Saltines”
Great sound and really solid guitar riff. A simple song, but the way the guitar, drums and vocals all lean against each other makes it sound not simplistic. And I think I have a crush on the stand up bassist.
Todd Snider “Too Soon To Tell”
A friend of mine turned me on to Todd Snider a while back and this song kind of stopped me in my tracks for a second to slow down for a moment and stop what I was doing to just listen. He’s got a genuine aspect to his songwriting that always comes through. You hear so many songs these days that are so packaged for a certain audience to make money for the record companies, but Todd is authentic and tells a story about truth and honesty in every song.
A$AP Rocky “F**king Problem”
My thugnasty song of the year.
The Black Keys “Gold on the Ceiling
Love this song though. Really got my dad into the Black Keys with this song too, so it has extra meaning for me.
The Joy Formidable “Whirring”
This is an older song, but I just started listening to them this year while studying. Not sure if that counts as a song of 2012
Maverick Sabre “I Need”
Over the Top Brit-soul, but this time a dude singer. For me, this song describes the morning after you decide it’s time to grow the fuck up. The morning after you left the club for the last time. (NOTE: I don’t mean when you stopped partying. I mean the time when you figured out the what, how and who the fuck you were and started living accordingly)
Gotye “Somebody That I Used to Know”
As much as it hurts me to say …. for me the top song has to take into account how big the song was … even though it became so popular that i can barely stand to hear it now … when it was first out it was hard to deny how good it was.
Red Fang “Wires”
Red fang of course. It rocked, grooved, and the video was good for endless watches
Maroon 5 “One More Night”
As cheesy as it is, i have not tired of Maroon 5, one more night- song. I just enjoy its upbeatness when I hear it.
